It’s been a very exciting year. We now have seven regional ANBC Championships for 2019 around Australia. Stanthorpe & Noosa in Qld, Kilmore in Vic, and Peak Hill, Narooma, Gundagai and Cooma in NSW.
This year, we have also seen many of our ANBC buskers going from strength to strength. Vendulka appeared again on national TV on The Voice. She has also just released a fantastic new video, Good Words, which features our beautiful South East scenery. Oscar Litchfield, Lucy Sugerman, Yasmin Russell, Jack Biillmann, Andrew Wortes, Flynn Gurry, Kesha Oayda, Rory Phillips, Haystack Mountain Hermits, The String Family, Narooma Rhythm Hunters, Stitch, Fretz & Reedz, Niq Reefman, Felicity Kircher, Fvceless and many more are getting regular gigs and performing in festivals both locally and away.
One of our ANBC Noosa Buskers, Tones And I, has actually had a huge breakthrough with her new single Dance Monkey which is now number one on the Aria Charts. (The first Australian artist to achieve that this year and the first Australian female artist to make number one since Delta Goodrem did it in 2015).
It’s all good news and we couldn’t do it without the amazing generosity of our sponsors.
So Thank You!

Congratulations to Tones And I!
From ANBC Busker to Number One in the Aria Charts!
Tones And I, aka Toni Watson, performed at the ANBC Noosa Busking Championships in 2018. There she was noticed by Oz Bayldon, the director of Noosa Come together and the Gympie Music Muster. Oz predicted a huge future for this new talent and he invited her to perform at the Gympie Music Muster. She was then discovered by triple j Unearthed and the rest, as they say, is history.
Fun fact – the last Australian female to do this was Delta Goodrem in 2015.

Australian National Busking Championships™ Returns to Stanthorpe in 2019
Saturday 23 March
Download Entry Form – All Welcome: Busking Stanthorpe Entry Form 2019 (1)
Stanthorpe will again be hosting a regional competition for the Australian National Busking Championships™ in 2019. This event will be Stanthorpe’s fourth annual event and it will be all happening on Saturday 23rd March.
This ANBC Stanthorpe Busking Festival has proven to be a winner for Stanthorpe, bringing musicians and street entertainers from all over Australia. It’s always a fun-filled family day with a huge variety of free entertainment on display. Local businesses and supporters generously provide prize money for the buskers and the local economy is enhanced by an increase in visitor numbers.
In 2018, the Stanthorpe winners Haystack Mountain Hermits (open category) and Felicity Kircher (secondary age category) went on to take out the top awards at the ANBC National Grand Finals in Cooma NSW. ANBC Director Allan Spencer said “these Stanthorpe champions went up against the very best performers from six other ANBC regional finals from all around Australia. It was a credit to these wonderful musicians and a proud honour for Stanthorpe, because it was the Stanthorpe competition that gave them their chance at the nationals”.
The regional busking festivals are designed to not only celebrate and reward the best performers but also to encourage everyone, young and old. The Australian National Busking Championships™ is now in its eighth year and has provided a great stepping stone for performers wanting to get into the entertainment industry. The Stanthorpe committee for 2019 is excited about continuing as hosts and is providing friendly encouragement to people of all ages and abilities to have a go and share their music or street performances with others.
The 2019 event will be a perfect mix of music for Stanthorpe with busking during the day and finishing in time for Sounds in the Vines at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds from 4pm.
Buskers interested in participating in the 2019 South East Queensland Busking Championships in Stanthorpe can contact president@appleandgrape.org or telephone 0400 750 351.

The Australian National Busking Championships are in their seventh year, and it is going to be bigger than ever.
With the addition of the second day, the town of Cooma will be able to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere this event creates for even longer.
The variety of acts the buskers offer is extraordinary. Musicians of all different styles come from across the country to compete. Music genres such as, Country, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Folk, Alternative and Classical music, are all on display. Non-musical acts such as jugglers, dancers and magicians have also featured in previous years. Who knows what amazing talent will come out of the woodwork next.
Not to mention the local talent, which is always surprising to witness.
Spectators are able to wander the streets, listening to this variety of buskers performing in 30 different locations. They can stop and sit outside a café with a delicious coffee and snack while the competitors entertain them.
It’s like attending a unique music festival, and it’s all for free.
There will be over $16,000 up for grabs in prizes for the buskers, thanks to the support of local businesses.
The People’s Choice is a very special award that is decided by the spectators.
By purchasing a Busker Vote for $1 from the Cooma Rotary Club Stall or roaming sellers, you vote for your favourite busker by placing your vote in their collection container, whether it be a hat or a guitar case. You can also throw real money into the collection containers if you would like to show further appreciation for your favourite busker.
The votes will be collected and counted by event officials throughout the day and the top three buskers will be presented with the award at the Finals Concert.
Since beginning seven years ago, the Australian National Busking Championships have had several towns come on board for the Regional Championships, including Stanthorpe and Noosa in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, and Narooma, Peak Hill and Gundagai in NSW. There has also been interest from other towns, with organizers hoping it will grow to become a real national event.
These Regional Championships take place throughout the year with the winning buskers coming to Cooma for the National Grand Final on Sunday, November 4, our second day of a massive weekend of busking fun.
Entering the competition is $20 for individuals, $40 for duos and $50 for groups. Entry is free for the national finalists. With most buskers not having a great deal of money, this is a small cost for the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in prize money.
The Australian National Busking Championships provides an opportunity for these performers to display their talents to a wider audience. It has led to further opportunities for many of the previous winners such as The String Family, Haystack Mountain Hermits, Oscar Litchfield, Vendulka (who went on to compete in the X Factor) and Lucy Sugerman (who went all the way through to the Grand Final of The Voice), and many others. Who knows what talent will be discovered this year.
Mark the dates in your calendar and plan a trip to Cooma for the Australian National Busking Championships – it is not to be missed.

The historic Cooma Correctional Centre and prison museum will for the first time become a ‘busking hot spot’ next month when the seventh annual Australian National Busking Championships are held in the Snowy Mountains town.
Hundreds of buskers from across Australia will perform outside the still-operating prison and other busking hot spots throughout Cooma for the two-day festival on 3–4 November.
Cooma Correctional Centre Manager of Security Scott Bramble said they were proud to take part in the important community event.
“The annual championship not only brings tourism dollars to the town of Cooma, it brings music to our streets,” Mr Bramble said.
“We’re proud to be part of the Cooma community and we’re looking forward to showcasing to guests the prison’s historic gatehouse and the neighbouring Corrective Services museum, which is a terrific place to visit.”
The museum showcases the history of Corrective Services NSW, with a range of displays and artefacts from convict days to the present. Minimum-security inmates are the tour guides.
Australian National Busking Championships President Allan Spencer said they were excited about using the 19th century prison as a busking location for the first time.
“Using a correctional centre – and the museum – as a backdrop for busking will be a first for Cooma and possibly for Australia,” Mr Spencer said.
“Buskers will be coming to compete from all around the country for a share of over $16,000 in cash prizes, as well as the glory of being crowned Busking Champion.
“There will be a huge variety of performances, with genres such as country, blues, rock, pop, jazz, folk, Indigenous, multicultural and classical music on display.
“There will also be other forms of street performance such as dance, juggling, magic, poetry, and even belly dancers, and a 20-piece bagpipe and drum band.”

The luthiers at the premier Spanish guitar making workshop, Alhambra, website have just come out with a new student model classical guitar, the model zero.
This is a lovely matte finished full-sized classical guitar with a solid cedar top. It retails for the amazing price of just $499!
The previous entry point guitar in the Alhambra range was its glossy brother, the model 1C which retails for $699. That’s $200 more than the new model zero.
This new model zero is an amazing guitar for the price. It has a beautiful solid cedar top which gives it a full deep rich bass and a warm sustaining treble, plus there’s heaps of volume.
How can they do it for the price? Maybe they saved on the no-frills matte finish. Probably, but what a guitar! Made in Spain for $499. This is really going to upset the Chinese. The Spanish guitar makers are fighting back!

The Australian National Busking Championships™ (ANBC) is now in it’s 6th year. For the first four years the ANBC has been held exclusively in Cooma NSW, the picturesque and historic capital of Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We have thought of these early years as the first stage in the ANBC vision for the future.
The next stage now is to make this event a truly National Championship by holding ANBC Regional Busking Competitions in various regional towns around Australia. The winners from these regional events will be then invited to complete in the National Grand Final back in Cooma in November of each year.
These are our 2017 Regional Busking Competitions so far:
In 2018 we could have as many as seven more regional towns on board.
How Does This Work in Cooma?
The People’s Choice Award.
All buskers are encouraged to earn cash tips throughout the competition. 100% of this money made in cash tips is theirs to keep. Among these generous prizes there’s the Peoples Choice Awards where the public gets to vote for their favourite busker. The Peoples Choice Awards are $2,000 in total.
All The Prizes:

– A Unique Music Festival For Your Town
About:
The Australian National Busking Championships™ (ANBC) is now in it’s 5th year. For the first four years the ANBC has been held exclusively in Cooma NSW, the picturesque and historic capital of Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We have thought of these early years as the first stage in the ANBC vision for the future.
The next stage now is to make this event a truly National Championship by holding Preliminary Championships in various regional towns around Australia. The winners from these regional events will be then invited to complete in the Grand Final back in Cooma on the first weekend in November of each year.
This event has been a great success from day one and as the years have gone by we have developed a template for this festival that we feel, can work in any town with the right kind support and know-how.
We have already had a wonderfully successful ANBC Preliminary Regional Final in Stanthrope, Queensland this year in February.

A Unique Music Festival:
The Australian National Busking Championships™ is a different sort of music festival for Australia. Music festivals in Australia have typically been based on a particular style of music, e.g. Tamworth Country Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival. The ANBC is a celebration of all styles of music because the buskers that perform in this festival bring a huge variety of music to the event. Whether that be Blues, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Folk, Country, Bluegrass, Indigenous, Multicultural or Classical, the Australian National Busking Championships™ reflects the rich diversity of Australian music culture.
Tickets for most music festivals are expensive; in the ANBC all the street entertainment is provided free of charge. The audience can, of course, tip the busker but that is their choice. All this wonderful music is performed literally feet away from them.
Although there are buskers at many music festivals in Australia, busking is typically relegated to a fringe activity. However, in this festival the buskers take pride of place. This festival brings music back to the people, back to the streets.
How Does This Work?
The buskers are assigned special locations (Busking Hot Spots), at various times, around the central business district of the participating town. A timetable will be emailed to all the registered buskers. Roaming judges assess these performances during the day. The buskers get to choose how many sets they would like to perform and whether they would like to perform for the whole day or just at certain times. However, all buskers must be available to perform in the Preliminary Finals Concert at say, 5pm to be held in an open air venue such as the town park.
The prize-winners for the age categories will be selected by a panel of judges at the Preliminary Finals Concert. The Open Age Winner for each of these regional championships will be invited to go on to compete in the Grand Finals in Cooma.
A Worthwhile Community Event.
In Cooma, we have found that from it’s first year the Australian National Busking Championships™ has helped local not-for-profit groups raise money through fund raising activities on the day. Organisations such as the Cooma District Hospital Auxiliary, Cooma Rotary Club, Cooma Railway, 2MNO Community Radio, Cooma Swimming Club, St Patrick’s Parish School, to name a few, have raised thousands of dollars through this event. In fact, the main reason why the Australian National Busking Championships™ came into existence was through the wonderful work of the “Snowy Ride”. The ANBC was originally conceived to provide entertainment and fun for the 4,000 or so Snowy Riders as they pass through Cooma. Since it’s beginnings in 2001, this annual motorcycle event has raised over $5 million towards childhood cancer research. The Snowy Ride is organised by the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation. So we, at the Australian National Busking Championships™ are pleased to support the Snowy Ride. For more information about the Snowy Ride go to:https://www.snowyride.org.au/
The ANBC has also generated a much needed financial boost to the businesses of our country town. Coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, retail shops and service stations have all benefited over the years. For Cooma, the ANBC comes at a normally “lean time” well after the winter ski season and before the start of Christmas trading. To their credit, local businesses have got behind this event by generously sponsoring prizes for the winners of the Championships.
The Rotary Club Partnership.
In 2014, the Rotary Club of Cooma offered their assistance in running this community based event. Ever since, ANBC has gone from strength to strength. The ANBC committee sees this Rotary connection has vital to the continual growth of this great event.
The Australian National Busking Championships™ has the unique ability to provide significant benefits to the performers, the venue hosts, local businesses, community organisations and the general public. We hope you can join us in providing this wonderful event for your town. Celebrate with us, Australia’s rich and diverse music street culture!

ANBC Cooma 2016 will be a combined event. A Cooma Regional Competition plus National Grand Final on the same day (5th November).
The Grand Final which will contain invited finalists from ANBC Stanthorpe Regional Competition (which was held earlier this year in February) as well as finalists selected during day’s busking in Cooma. This will be the last such combined event.
In 2017 we are on track to have possibly 10 or more Regional Competitions. We will then have two events in Cooma – A Cooma Regional Competition and a National Grand Final also held in Cooma where finalists from all the 10 or so, more about Regional Competitions will compete for the major titles.
The two 2017 Cooma events will be held in Cooma at different times in the year. The Cooma Regional Competition will be held possibly in Autumn 2017 and the Grand Final will be later in the year in November 2017.

Programme:
The conductor, traumatologist Rowan Harvey Martin, will direct a program of very listenable early 20th century music by European composers
An English Suite for String Orchestra, 1914
In the “High English” style, with moments of simple, melodic grace sandwiched between episodes of complexity and sophistication. Still incomplete at his death in 1918, this work was finished by his amanuensis.
Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra & Piano Obligato, 1924
Clearly constructed as a Concerto Grosso but incorporating traditional sounding melodies from his heritage. Surprising humour at times, and more than one swipe at JS Bach.
Ancient Airs and Dances (for Lute) Suite III. 1932.
Respighi’s characteristicly intricate reworking of old music to subtly exploit the capabilities of “modern” instruments.
Five Greek Dances
Passionate, unquestionably Greek, dances for string orchestra.

ambulance sans-serif;”>Last Saturday saw the return of the enormously popular Australian National Busking Championships™ to the CBD of Cooma. Over 170 musicians played their hearts out to compete for over $8,000 in prizes and the coveted title of Australian National Busking Champion. The buskers commenced their street performances at 9.00am and played all day until 5.00 pm – the start of the Finals Concert in Centennial Park. At the Finals Concert five judges, Gunther Gorman, Marian Budos, Graham French, Donna Smith and ABC Radio presenter, Michael Cavanagh decided which buskers would receive the 23 awards on offer.
Singer-guitarist Guyy Lilleyman won the Open Champion for the second year running. He won a cash prize of $2,000. After winning last year’s Open Champion, Guyy has been enjoying an enormous boost to his music career. He has just returned from a highly successful tour of South Africa where he and his duo partner, violinist Amelia Gibson, played for thousands of new fans throughout that country. Guyy advertised on his South African tour posters that he was the “Australian National Busking Champion”.
Second place in the open section went to Vendulka Wichta. She won a cash prize of $300. Vendulka is, of course, Cooma’s very own X Factor girl and very much a crowd favourite in this event. Vendulka and Guyy are great friends so although they took this competition very seriously, they still managed to stay friends. They drove down together from Canberra for the day. Third place in the open section went to a fabulous folk group called “The Button Collective”. They received a cash prize of $200. Originally formed in Lismore, The Button
The Button Collective came all the way from Sydney to compete in the Australian National Busking Championships
Collective is now a Sydney-based band. They are in huge demand – they are constantly on the road performing in folk festivals all over Australia. The band is lead by guitarist, mandolin player and singer, Brodie Buttons aka Brodie Nossiter who was born and raised in Cooma, with piano accordion player Quinton Trembath and double bassist Jacob Pember.
This year’s People’s Choice Award was Olivia Cakarun a talented 13 year old singer-guitarist from Sydney. She won $1,000. The second place winners were the Button Collective, earning themselves $700 to add to their booty. The third place People’s Choice Award was Harry Cleverdon, winning himself $300.
In the secondary section, Josh Maynard, a singer-guitarist from Cowra took out the first prize and $500. The second prize went to another singer-guitarist, Lucy Sugerman. Lucy is from Canberra and she also received $300. The third prize of $200 went to the three-piece group Raising Cain. This is a group of local musicians: Sarah Nicholson, Rory Maclean and Ehlana Wright. In the primary age section, which was sponsored by the Cooma-Monaro Express, Harry
Harry Cleverdon came from Young to become the Australian National Busking Champion – primary section
Cleverdon came first. Harry is a singer and keyboard player. He came down from Young with his family for the day. His prize was $300. The second prize of $200 was awarded to the brother and sister singing duo “Kick It”. They are Ted and Lucia Stewart from Canberra. The third place went to Tomas Carton. Tomas, who won $100, is a piano player from Cooma.
This year there were also 10 Special Judges Awards of $200 each. These were for buskers that the judges thought deserving of special recognition. They were: The Brademann Brothers (from Cooma), The Browne Sisters (from Tanja), Connor Ross (from Cobargo), Cooma Public School Choir, Dab Three (from Woodbine), Marco Solo (from Cobargo), Roger McCulloch (from Cooma), Rowena Evans (from Cooma), Tessa Divine (from Canberra), and Undertow (from Canberra). There was also a special “Farthest Traveller Award” of $100 that went to the busker that had to travel the longest distance to perform in the Championships. This award was donated by Michael Hutchesson. Michael, who is from South Australia, is a huge fan of the Championships. He couldn’t make it to this year’s event but still wanted to be part of the excitement. This year’s third annual Australian National Busking Championships™ was by any measure a huge success, but it could not have happened without the generous support of the Rotary Club of Cooma, the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council, Cooma School of Music and these local businesses and organizations: Alpine Hotel Cooma, Cooma Hotel, Cooma-Monaro Express, Roses Restaurant, Mark Kenmir & Co, Eucumbene Trout Farm, Cooma Little Theatre, Cooma Lions Club, Cooma Family Dental, Snowy Monaro Arts Council, P D Murphy’s Cafe, Moontree Health Foods, The Monaro Post, ABC Local Radio, Radio 2XL, Snow FM Radio, 2MNO Community Radio, Cooma Cafe, 40 Cafe, Never Ending Memories, Mainstreet, Snowy Camping World, Cooma Trophy & Gift Centre, Pizza House Food Factory, Bush Basics, Kettle and Seed, The Two Vaults Restaurant and The Lott Foodstore. Stars Will Come Out This Saturday
In the first item on the Arts Council’s concert programme this Saturday evening, musician Chris Wall will be playing trumpet and piano at the same time. To find out how he achieves this and to appreciate the results, you will need to come along to St Paul’s Anglican Parish Hall for the 7:30pm recital.
This concert, the final Snowy Monaro Arts Council presentation for 2014, is named “Stars” in deference to the rich programme. It includes the title song, “Stars” from ‘Les Miserables’ as well as Albert Arlen’s arrangement of “Clancy of the Overflow” (featuring the lines, “And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended, and at the night the wond’rous glory of the everlasting stars”).
These two pieces are not the only stars to be enjoyed on the night. The three performers Glenyss Allen, Thomas Keenan and Chris Wall are each very accomplished in their instruments – piano, voice and brass respectively.
The programme also showcases well-loved composers and well-loved tunes such as Henry Mancini and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Tickets for “Stars” are available at The Fabric Salon in Cooma. Admission is $25 for an Adult, $20 for Concession and $15 for Snowy Monaro Arts Council members. Admission is free for children and school students. Of course supper is included in the ticket price.
Contact Glenyss Allen 6452 3561 for further information

How to play thousands of songs without even trying…
Most songs can be played with 3 or 4 chords. Musicians called this the “Three Chord Trick”.
These chords are based on triads built on the first, search fourth & fifth notes of the scale you are working in.
Ok before your eyes start to glaze over I’ve added a one page chart that you can use as a quick reference. ( print it & keep it in your guitar case) Pdf > Chords for Guitar – Working in Chord Progressions
I’ve just stayed with the most common keys for guitar and added in some of the extra chords (vi & ii -occasionally iii in the Major keys and III & VII in the Minor keys). If you become familiar with these typical chord progressions you’ll be able to accompany thousands songs as well as get a deeper understanding about how harmony works in any style of diatonic music generally.
(This works with Ukulele too!)

The luthiers at the premier Spanish guitar making workshop, decease Alhambra, hospital have just came out with a new student model classical guitar, gynecologist the model zero.
This is a lovely matte finished full-sized classical guitar with a solid cedar top. It retails for the amazing price of just $399!
The previous entry point guitar in the Alhambra range was it’s glossy brother, the model 1C which retails for $599. That’s $200 more than the new model zero.
This new model zero is an amazing guitar for the price. It has a beautiful solid cedar top which give it a full deep rich bass and a warm sustaining treble, plus there’s heaps of volume.
How can they do it for the price? Maybe they saved on the no-frills matte finish. Probably, but what a guitar! Made in Spain for $399. This is really going to upset the Chinese. The Spanish guitar makers are fighting back!
There are only 12 of these model zero guitars imported into Australia and the next shipment could be dearer if the Aussi dollar keeps going down.

The String Contingent:
Virtuosic instrumental trio The String Contingent compose and perform music of sparkling beauty and originality that explores the full spectrum of musical expression. Australians Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) with Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar) integrate disparate musical styles through their own refined acoustic sensibilities.
Drawing from genres including celtic, classical, jazz and bluegrass, The String Contingent burnish their original compositions through the clarity and precision of a meticulous ‘chamber music’ ethos. Their multi-faceted approach results in highly accessible yet sophisticated music that captivates audiences from any genre, while retaining their own unique style.
“The most amazing trio of musicians you will come across. Subtle, entertaining, mesmerising and totally engaging folk. Wonderful stuff.”
— Anthony John Clarke, songwriter and performer, UK
