Stanthorpe will again be hosting a regional competition for the Australian National Busking Championships™ in 2019. This event will be Stanthorpe’s fourth annual event and it will be all happening on Saturday 23rd March.

This ANBC Stanthorpe Busking Festival has proven to be a winner for Stanthorpe, bringing musicians and street entertainers from all over Australia. It’s always a fun-filled family day with a huge variety of free entertainment on display. Local businesses and supporters generously provide prize money for the buskers and the local economy is enhanced by an increase in visitor numbers.

In 2018, the Stanthorpe winners Haystack Mountain Hermits (open category) and Felicity Kircher (secondary age category) went on to take out the top awards at the ANBC National Grand Finals in Cooma NSW. ANBC Director Allan Spencer said â€œthese Stanthorpe champions went up against the very best performers from six other ANBC regional finals from all around Australia. It was a credit to these wonderful musicians and a proud honour for Stanthorpe, because it was the Stanthorpe competition that gave them their chance at the nationalsâ€.

The regional busking festivals are designed to not only celebrate and reward the best performers but also to encourage everyone, young and old. The Australian National Busking Championships™ is now in its eighth year and has provided a great stepping stone for performers wanting to get into the entertainment industry. The Stanthorpe committee for 2019 is excited about continuing as hosts and is providing friendly encouragement to people of all ages and abilities to have a go and share their music or street performances with others.

The 2019 event will be a perfect mix of music for Stanthorpe with busking during the day and finishing in time for Sounds in the Vines at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds from 4pm.

The Australian National Busking Championships are in their seventh year, and it is going to be bigger than ever.

With the addition of the second day, the town of Cooma will be able to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere this event creates for even longer.

The variety of acts the buskers offer is extraordinary. Musicians of all different styles come from across the country to compete. Music genres such as, Country, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Folk, Alternative and Classical music, are all on display. Non-musical acts such as jugglers, dancers and magicians have also featured in previous years. Who knows what amazing talent will come out of the woodwork next.

Not to mention the local talent, which is always surprising to witness.

Spectators are able to wander the streets, listening to this variety of buskers performing in 30 different locations. They can stop and sit outside a cafÃ© with a delicious coffee and snack while the competitors entertain them.

Itâ€™s like attending a unique music festival, and itâ€™s all for free.

There will be over $16,000 up for grabs in prizes for the buskers, thanks to the support of local businesses.

The Peopleâ€™s Choice is a very special award that is decided by the spectators.

By purchasing a Busker Vote for $1 from the Cooma Rotary Club Stall or roaming sellers, you vote for your favourite busker by placing your vote in their collection container, whether it be a hat or a guitar case. You can also throw real money into the collection containers if you would like to show further appreciation for your favourite busker.

The votes will be collected and counted by event officials throughout the day and the top three buskers will be presented with the award at the Finals Concert.

Since beginning seven years ago, the Australian National Busking Championships have had several towns come on board for the Regional Championships, including Stanthorpe and Noosa in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, and Narooma, Peak Hill and Gundagai in NSW. There has also been interest from other towns, with organizers hoping it will grow to become a real national event.

These Regional Championships take place throughout the year with the winning buskers coming to Cooma for the National Grand Final on Sunday, November 4, our second day of a massive weekend of busking fun.

Entering the competition is $20 for individuals, $40 for duos and $50 for groups. Entry is free for the national finalists. With most buskers not having a great deal of money, this is a small cost for the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in prize money.

The Australian National Busking Championships provides an opportunity for these performers to display their talents to a wider audience. It has led to further opportunities for many of the previous winners such as The String Family, Haystack Mountain Hermits, Oscar Litchfield, Vendulka (who went on to compete in the X Factor) and Lucy Sugerman (who went all the way through to the Grand Final of The Voice), and many others. Who knows what talent will be discovered this year.

The Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢Â is an Australia-wide network of busking festivals. The ANBC celebrates the rich diversity of Australian music and street performance culture.Â ThroughoutÂ the year, Regional Finals are held in towns all over Australia culminating in the ANBC National Grand Final which is held in Cooma NSW on the first weekend of November each year.

About ANBC Cooma 2017

The Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ (ANBC) is now in it’s 6th year. For the first four years the ANBC has been held exclusively in Cooma NSW, the picturesque and historic capital of Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We have thought of these early years as the first stage in the ANBC vision for the future.

The next stage now is to make this event a truly National Championship by holding ANBC Regional Busking Competitions in various regional towns around Australia. The winners from these regional events will be then invited to complete in the National Grand Final back in Cooma in November of each year.

These are our 2017 Regional Busking Competitions so far:

Stanthorpe Qld â€“ 25 February
Ballarat Vic â€“ 18 March
Narooma NSW â€“ 27 May
Noosa Qld â€“ 10 June
Peak Hill NSW â€“ 23 September

In 2018 we could have as many as seven more regional towns on board.

How Does This Work in Cooma?

The buskers are assigned special locations (Busking Hot Spots), at various times, around the CBD Cooma.
A timetable is given to all the registered buskers.
Roaming judges assess these busking performances during the day.
The Judges produce a short list of the best buskers who are then invited to compete in a Grand Final Concert at 4:00 pm at Centennial Park.
First place winners from the Open, Secondary and Primary age categories from the other ANBC Regional Competitions also qualify for a place a the Grand Final. These first place winners are also welcome to busk during the day as they can earn cash tips and Peoples Choice Award votes.
The prizes are then awarded to the buskers with the most outstanding performances at this Grand Finals Concert.

The People’s Choice Award.

All buskers are encouraged to earn cash tips throughout the competition. 100% of this money made in cash tips is theirs to keep. Buskers may also sell their CDs and other merchandise.100% of this money from these sales will also go to these buskers. So besides the extra dollars that enterprising buskers can make in tips and sales there’s over $10,000 in cash to be won. This $10,000 prize pool is made up of over twenty different categories. Among these generous prizes there’s the Peoples Choice Awards where the public gets to vote for their favourite busker. The Peoples Choice Awards are $2,000 in total.

These prizes are awarded to the buskers that get the most Busker Votes.
The public will be able to purchase Busker Votes for $1 each on the day from the Cooma Rotary Club.
There’s a limit of 50 Busker Votes per customer.
The customer must validate their Busker Votes by writing their name and telephone number on the back of their Busker Votes.
Invalid Busker Votes will not be counted.
The public then can vote for their favorite busker by tipping that busker with Busker Votes.
By the way, all of the Busker Votes will be placed into a Lucky Draw for several great prizes.
The Busker Votes Lucky Draw will be conducted during the Finals Concert at the end of the day after all the Busker Votes have been counted.
So the public can share in the fun of the Grand Final Concert by also having a chance at winning prizes.

All The Prizes:

Competitors must be at the Grand Final Concert to win a prize.
In the Age Categories (Open/Secondary/Primary) competitors must be ready to perform on stage.
If deemed necessary the judges may decide to award extra places in the Age Categories. Suitable cash amounts will be allocated to these extra places.

$500 – Third Place

Secondary Age Category

$500 – First Place (Secondary Champion)
$300 – Second Place
$200 – Third Place

Primary Age Category

$300 – First Place (Primary Champion)

$100 – Third Place

Best Band – $1,000

Best School Group – $1,000

Peoples Choice Awards

$1,000 – First Place
$700 – Second Place
