MEDIA RELEASE

Peter de Jager Returns to the Home of his Childhood, pills

Accomplished pianist Peter de Jager is nearing the end of his second year of a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne, neurologist
majoring in composition. In August this year, for sale
aged only 21, Peter beat other Australian and international competitors to take out the top prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition.

And, not only did he win First Prize, but he was also awarded the People’s Choice Prize, the awards for Best Performance of the E Minor Concerto and Best Performance of a Chopin Nocturne or Etude, the Best Performance of a Mazurka and Best Performance of the Roger Smalley Variations.

Fifteen years ago Peter and his family were residents of Cooma, where Peterand his sister attended Cooma North Primary School. His mother Helen taught piano through Cooma School of Music.

Peter de Jager wins Chopin Piano Competition 2011 (from Canberra Times)

“It was obvious from a very early age that Peter was a gifted child with a remarkable musical talent,” said Allan Spencer of the School of Music, “He was totally in love with the piano.”

In 1997 the de Jager family moved away from Monaro. In Melbourne, Peter continued his study of the piano and achieved his Licentiate of Music at the age of just 11. The Licentiate is considered the highest diploma awarded by the Australian Music Examinations Board, and is rarely achieved by anybody aged below adulthood, often taking many years of study.

Snowy Monaro Arts Council is very proud to welcome Peter’s return to Cooma, when he gives a recital on Sunday 6 November at 3:00pm, at St Paul’s Anglican Parish Hall. Tickets for the performance are available from The Fabric Salon and also at the door prior to 3:00pm.

Sing Your Own Handel’s Messiah – Saturday 12 November 2011

Just a brief post from Snowy Monaro Arts Council, phimosis to give you advance notice of “Sing Your Own Messiah” on Saturday 12th November 2011 at St Paul’s Hall, thumb Cooma.

Robert Shearer and Snowy Monaro Arts Council will present Handel’s Messiah, with –

Conductor Rodney Clancy;

Soprano Elizabeth Shearer;

Mezzo Soprano Bronwyn Douglas;

Tenor Robert Shearer; and

Bass Joshua Burke;

And a Chamber Orchestra of local musicians.

But the best bit is that you get to be the chorus…

Ever wanted to sing Hallelujah Chorus? Well, here’s your chance.

We are hoping for lots of voices from Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River Shires. Blokes are especially welcome.

The main workshop/rehearsal will be from 9 am on Saturday 12th November with the public performance at 7.00 pm on that night.  There will also be additional practices (not compulsory) in each of the weeks leading up to the event (the weeks commencing Monday 31st October 2011 and Monday 7th November 2011) for those who would like to “notebash” their parts. (call 6452 6067 for details of extra rehearsals).

The “Sing your Own” portion of the workshop and performance will consist of  just six pieces:

  1. And the Glory of the Lord
  2. Oh Thou That Tellest
  3. For Unto Us a Child is Born
  4. Glory to God in the Highest
  5. All We Like Sheep
  6. Hallelujah

There are three ways to get the parts.

The first is to go to http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=20064.

Scroll down and on the middle of the page you will see pdf symbols for the various parts.

Click on “vocal”, and download the choruses at 1.4, 1.10, 1.13, 1.19, 2.4 and 2.22, and the Amen (3.10).

If you do that, send your email to chris@coomalaw.com.au so we have an email with which to keep you informed.

The second way is to send an email to allan@coomamusic.com.au, and Allan will email the part to you.

Please c.c. to chris@coomalaw.com.au, so we have your email to keep you informed.

The third way is to contact Chris Wall at 7 Dawson Street, Cooma NSW 2630 and request us to photocopy the parts for you.

Obviously, the first method is a lot less work for the organisers, so please do that if you can.

There are rehearsal tracks available on the net, one at http://www.ultimate.com/ccc/messiah/.

In preparation, you can sing along with your computer.

The tracks on that site are 04 “And the Glory of the Lord” (1.4 free-scores), 09 “Oh Thou That Tellest” (1.10 free-scores), 12 “For Unto Us a Child is Born” (1.13 free-scores), 17 “Glory to God in the Highest” (1.19 free-scores), 26 “All We Like Sheep” (2.4 free-scores), 44 “Hallelujah” (2.22 free-scores).

So give it a shake.

Follow the above instructions and register, and send this email onto anyone you think might be interested, and set Saturday 12th November 2011 aside.

Chris Wall, President, Snowy Monaro Arts Council
