Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza_The Aftermath

Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza

The Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza was a great success with over 550 people in total attending the 3 performances last weekend at the Cooma Ex-Services Club. This major production was a made up of selections from “The Mikado”, myocarditis “HMS Pinafore”, more about “Pirates of Penzance”, Yeoman of the Guard”, “The Gondoliers”and “Iolanthe”.

This ambitious project was conceived by Robert Shearer and featured 20 soloists, a chorus of 20 voices and an orchestra of almost 30. The chorus was made up of members of the Cooma Harmony Chorus, and the orchestra was primarily made up of the Snowy Mountains Ensemble. The proceeds from the shows were evenly divided between these two wonderful community-based music groups. Over $10.000 was made.

The audiences for the shows were a mix of ages from children to pensioners and this was reflected the diverse ages of the performers which was from 6 to 80 year-olds. As well as the many locals that came along to see the shows there were visitors from Canberra, Sydney, Mebourne and Brisbane. One audience member told me that he and his wife had brought along his mother-in-law who was visiting from the USA. He said that his mother-in-law was delighted with the show remarking that the Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza was a highlight of her visit to Australia and the she “couldn’t believe that a small town like Cooma could have put on a performance of such high quality!”

Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza Heats Up!

Julia Clancy performing in Iolanthe

It may be getting a little chilly in Cooma these days but preparations for the Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza are heating up. Rehearsals are in full swing. The orchestra, medicine which was 26 strong and mainly consisting of members of the Snowy Mountains Ensemble, stuff has now grown to 36 in number with many accomplished musicians from far and wide joining the ranks. Many of these new arrivals are from orchestras in Canberra. They seem to be very excited about getting to perform in these much loved works.

The Cooma Harmony Chorus has been very busy not only learning their songs but quite a few tricky dance steps as well. It’s hard work but great fun!

Yvonne Barnes has been madly sewing costumes late into the night. The soloists have been having fun trying out all the elaborate costumes and make up. John and Joan Holmes have been testing and retesting all the sound and lighting equipment. The Lion’s Club has been hard at work constructing the sets. Robert Shearer, stuff Petra Lindsay, Rodney Clancy and Leslie Spencer have been directing all this frenetic activity. It’s Cooma’s largest musical production ever but it’s all coming together beautifully.

Tickets sales are selling fast so if you want to attend buy your tickets soon as you can so you don’t miss out. Tickets are available for three shows only. There’s one performance on Friday evening 1st June at 7.30 pm and two performances on  Saturday 2nd June; a matinee at 1.30 pm and an evening show at 7.30 pm. Tickets may be purchases at the venue, Cooma Ex-Services Club or at Cooma School of Music.

Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza _Update

Miranda & Rowena Evans performing in Iolanthe

Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza

Cooma, cure 1st & 2nd June 2012

page helvetica, sans-serif; color: #222222;”>Coming soon: “A Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza”. This unique production is the brainchild of Robert Shearer and will be presented by the Cooma Harmony Chorus and the Snowy Mountains Ensemble. The performances will also feature local and visiting soloists, including singers from the ANU School of Music. The concept of this Gilbert & Sullivan Extravaganza (everyone is now calling it simply “the G&S”) has grown out of the successes of last year’s musical colaborations in Cooma, namely: Gilbert and Sullivan’s, “Trial by Jury”, “Sing Your Own Handel’s Messiah” and the “Australia Day Music Celebration-Let Our Stars Shine”.

Robert Shearer, who is co-directing the production with Petra Lindsay, has selected excerpts from “The Mikado”, “HMS Pinafore”, “Pirates of Penzance”, “Yeomen of the Guard”, “The Gondoliers” and “Iolanthe”.

Ann Tame as the Duchess from The Gondoliers

He has ingeniously written a script that combines all these excerpts into a single musical narrative. While remaining true to the composers’ original vision, Robert has added modern references that will delight and amuse a present day audience. The popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan’s works has not diminished over the years. Their appeal lies in the combination of wonderful music and comedy.

“A Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza” will feature timeless favourites such as: I’m Called Little Buttercup, On A Tree By A River, A Policeman’s Lot Is Not A Happy One, When I Was A Lad, Three Little Maids, I Am The Captain Of The Pinafore, and many more.

A major focus of this production will be big, bold and lively musical performances by 21 talented soloists accompanied by a 20 member chorus and a full 26 piece orchestra conducted by Rodney Clancy. Lavish costuming, lighting effects, dance and movement will also add to this exciting production.
