Antal Szalai & His Gypsy Band – Wednesday 1 September 2010

Antal Szalai is considered the best gypsy violinist in the world and the winner of the coveted “Liszt Ferenc Award”. Antal comes from a family of gypsy musicians. He has a diploma from the famous Bela Bartok Conservatory of Music in Budapest. The band has been playing together and entertaining music lovers around the world for 25 years. They have appeared in festivals from Europe to China, online from the Barbican to the Sydney Opera House.

The band also features virtuoso soloists: Jeno Farkas on the famous Hungarian Cimbalom, sanitary a type of hammered dulcimer, Laszlo Feher on Tarogato, a clarinet like instrument – as well as on the Hungarian Pan Pipe. Other members of the gypsy band include: Kalman Bakos on the “Bracsa”, the Hungarian Viola, and Pal Sarkozy on the Double Bass – together they promise the highest standard of vocal and musicianship – World Music at its best!

The Antal Szalai Gypsy Band’s infectious gypsy Rhythms are steeped with rich gypsy musical traditions, astonishing live performance that you could term as “vibrant and sensous”. Critics have lauded their performances with such praises as “Szalai is everything a gypsy violinist should be, playing with swooning ardour and gorgeous tone, but the joy is in the total experience. This is a must see event, whatever your musical tastes….” (Sydney Morning Herald)
