medicine
sans-serif;”>On Remembrance Day, 11 November at 3.00 pm, this year people from across the Snowy-Monaro will gather for a commemorative concert at Cooma Ex-Services Club.

Organised by Snowy Monaro Arts Council, with the support of Regional Arts NSW and South East Arts, the aim of the event is to bring people ‘together to remember’ and to celebrate the strength of the human spirit through music during times of conflict.

Ninety six years ago people from this district gathered when the Men from Snowy River Recruiting March made its way from Delegate through Cooma, Nimmitabel, Cooma, Bredbo and Michelago toward Goulburn to enlist for the First World War.

One of these Men from Snowy River, Ernest Corey, who joined the March at Cooma went on to be the only soldier to receive the Military Medal with three bars. The Ernest Corey Memorial stands in Vale Street and Corey’s descendants are local residents today.

At the 11 November concert instrumentalists and vocalists will present a repertoire of music which has inspired, encouraged and brought joy to the hearts of people – from those on the front lines to those keeping the home fires burning, to those mourning loved ones. Among the many items are the Irish patriotic song “The Minstrel Boy”, the “Colonel Bogey March” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”.

Robert Shearer is “Albert Herring” September 28, 29, 30, 2012

Robert Shearer will be performing the lead role in Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring.”

ANU School of Music and The Street Theatre Present Albert Herring, cystitis a deliciously witty comic opera by Benjamin Britten,  28 – 30 September 2012.
“Country virgins, if there be such, think too little and see too much.”

One of Benjamin Britten’s most admired works Albert Herring is a musically inventive coming-of-age story. Unable to find a worthy girl to be crowned May Queen, a small town elects the unquestionably virtuous Albert Herring instead . This lively opera filled with comical characters charts the meek and stumbling Albert’s journey from a fearful and submissive son, to one who steps out into the world, and is transformed.

Melodies abound amidst colourful music of rich imagination, freshness and subtlety with a chamber ensemble of thirteen players led by Melbourne-based conductor Rick Prakhoff joined by The Street Theatre’s artistic director Caroline Stacey. Albert Herring features a mix of professional singers and students from the ANU School of Music and follows the popular and critically acclaimed presentation of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in 2010.
