The Kilmore Busking Competition is a new event created by the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell (Victoria) and the Kilmore Art Society. Our inaugural Regional Championship will be held on Saturday 13 April 2019.
Our aim is to promote performance art to provide a performance and exposure pathway for emerging artists whilst also supporting the visual arts via the Kilmore Art Expo which will be held 12 -14 April 2019.
Kilmore is Victoria’s oldest inland settled town (Violet Town beat us by being gazetted first!) and has a fabulous history dating from the late 1830’s. Kilmore Historical Society are also on board and will be conducting some street tours on the day. Booking for events will be available 30 January 2019.
Kilmore main streetKilmore is located approximately 65 km north of Melbourne and is very accessible to Melbourne performers. Travel from central Melbourne is about 1 hour 15 minutes. The Championships will be held between 10am – 3.00pm. Three judges will be roaming on the day. However, the public will also be voting on their favourite performances. Winners in all categories – Primary, Secondary, Open & Peoples’ Choice will be announced at the Finals Concert held between 4pm – 6pm. Venue to be announced. There are also a number of $200.00 Judges Awards for performances that may not fit into the major categories.
We are so excited about the Busking competition! In November we joined with the Australian National Busking Championships™ which are based in Cooma. This means the winners of our Kilmore Championships can go on to compete nationally.
Buskers can perform for votes to win cash prizes and also for cash tips. We will be encouraging visitors to bring cash as well as cards to support performers. It’s going to be a great day out!

Stanthorpe will again be hosting a regional competition for the Australian National Busking Championships™ in 2019. This event will be Stanthorpe’s fourth annual event and it will be all happening on Saturday 23rd March.

This ANBC Stanthorpe Busking Festival has proven to be a winner for Stanthorpe, bringing musicians and street entertainers from all over Australia. It’s always a fun-filled family day with a huge variety of free entertainment on display. Local businesses and supporters generously provide prize money for the buskers and the local economy is enhanced by an increase in visitor numbers.

In 2018, the Stanthorpe winners Haystack Mountain Hermits (open category) and Felicity Kircher (secondary age category) went on to take out the top awards at the ANBC National Grand Finals in Cooma NSW. ANBC Director Allan Spencer said “these Stanthorpe champions went up against the very best performers from six other ANBC regional finals from all around Australia. It was a credit to these wonderful musicians and a proud honour for Stanthorpe, because it was the Stanthorpe competition that gave them their chance at the nationals”.

The regional busking festivals are designed to not only celebrate and reward the best performers but also to encourage everyone, young and old. The Australian National Busking Championships™ is now in its eighth year and has provided a great stepping stone for performers wanting to get into the entertainment industry. The Stanthorpe committee for 2019 is excited about continuing as hosts and is providing friendly encouragement to people of all ages and abilities to have a go and share their music or street performances with others.

The 2019 event will be a perfect mix of music for Stanthorpe with busking during the day and finishing in time for Sounds in the Vines at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds from 4pm.

Buskers interested in participating in the 2019 South East Queensland Busking Championships in Stanthorpe can contact president@appleandgrape.org or telephone 0400 750 351.

The Australian National Busking Championships are in their seventh year, and it is going to be bigger than ever.

With the addition of the second day, the town of Cooma will be able to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere this event creates for even longer.

The variety of acts the buskers offer is extraordinary. Musicians of all different styles come from across the country to compete. Music genres such as, Country, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Folk, Alternative and Classical music, are all on display. Non-musical acts such as jugglers, dancers and magicians have also featured in previous years. Who knows what amazing talent will come out of the woodwork next.

Not to mention the local talent, which is always surprising to witness.

Spectators are able to wander the streets, listening to this variety of buskers performing in 30 different locations. They can stop and sit outside a café with a delicious coffee and snack while the competitors entertain them.

It’s like attending a unique music festival, and it’s all for free.

There will be over $16,000 up for grabs in prizes for the buskers, thanks to the support of local businesses.

The People’s Choice is a very special award that is decided by the spectators.

By purchasing a Busker Vote for $1 from the Cooma Rotary Club Stall or roaming sellers, you vote for your favourite busker by placing your vote in their collection container, whether it be a hat or a guitar case. You can also throw real money into the collection containers if you would like to show further appreciation for your favourite busker.

The votes will be collected and counted by event officials throughout the day and the top three buskers will be presented with the award at the Finals Concert.

Since beginning seven years ago, the Australian National Busking Championships have had several towns come on board for the Regional Championships, including Stanthorpe and Noosa in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, and Narooma, Peak Hill and Gundagai in NSW. There has also been interest from other towns, with organizers hoping it will grow to become a real national event.

These Regional Championships take place throughout the year with the winning buskers coming to Cooma for the National Grand Final on Sunday, November 4, our second day of a massive weekend of busking fun.

Entering the competition is $20 for individuals, $40 for duos and $50 for groups. Entry is free for the national finalists. With most buskers not having a great deal of money, this is a small cost for the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in prize money.

The Australian National Busking Championships provides an opportunity for these performers to display their talents to a wider audience. It has led to further opportunities for many of the previous winners such as The String Family, Haystack Mountain Hermits, Oscar Litchfield, Vendulka (who went on to compete in the X Factor) and Lucy Sugerman (who went all the way through to the Grand Final of The Voice), and many others. Who knows what talent will be discovered this year.

Mark the dates in your calendar and plan a trip to Cooma for the Australian National Busking Championships –  it is not to be missed.

Busking Hot Spot for Old Cooma Gaol

Buskers at Cooma set to rock the Jailhouse for annual festival

5b4093a0-f516-4deb-bf12-11a3757347ee_lThe historic Cooma Correctional Centre and prison museum will for the first time become a ‘busking hot spot’ next month when the seventh annual Australian National Busking Championships are held in the Snowy Mountains town.

Hundreds of buskers from across Australia will perform outside the still-operating prison and other busking hot spots throughout Cooma for the two-day festival on 3–4 November.

Cooma Correctional Centre Manager of Security Scott Bramble said they were proud to take part in the important community event.Cooma Gaol Museum

“The annual championship not only brings tourism dollars to the town of Cooma, it brings music to our streets,” Mr Bramble said.

“We’re proud to be part of the Cooma community and we’re looking forward to showcasing to guests the prison’s historic gatehouse and the neighbouring Corrective Services museum, which is a terrific place to visit.”

The museum showcases the history of Corrective Services NSW, with a range of displays and artefacts from convict days to the present. Minimum-security inmates are the tour guides.

Australian National Busking Championships President Allan Spencer said they were excited about using the 19th century prison as a busking location for the first time.

“Using a correctional centre – and the museum – as a backdrop for busking will be a first for Cooma and possibly for Australia,” Mr Spencer said.

“Buskers will be coming to compete from all around the country for a share of over $16,000 in cash prizes, as well as the glory of being crowned Busking Champion.

“There will be a huge variety of performances, with genres such as country, blues, rock, pop, jazz, folk, Indigenous, multicultural and classical music on display.

“There will also be other forms of street performance such as dance, juggling, magic, poetry, and even belly dancers, and a 20-piece bagpipe and drum band.”
