Their aim is to bring a diversity of high quality musical presentations to the Cooma-Monaro district, and to recognise and celebrate the wealth of talent that thrives in this district.
This year’s Cooma Music Competition was a huge success. The Competition is now in it’s seventh year and over one hundred musicians performed in over eighty performances during the daytime heats. The heats were then followed by the Finals Concert which was made up the winners of the heats plus guest performances by the Jindabyne Central Stage Band, sildenafil and the Snowy Mountains Ensemble. Judging for this event was done by local musical maestros, information pills Robert Shearer, Rodney Clancy and Matt Charlesworth. Also Tessa Bremner, a renouned international opera, musical theatre and dance director and librettist helped with the adjudication. Tessa Bremner has worked many of the world’s leading musicians including Dame Joan Sutherland, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as well as Composers, Leonard Bernstein and Benjamin Britten. Her thoughts on stage presentation were much appreciated by the performers during a marathon day and evening of music. Each contestant received a detailed performance report which the judges hoped would help perfect their skills. The performers competed for medals, trophies, and cash prizes which totalled over $1000.

Robert Shearer will be performing the lead role in Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring.”
ANU School of Music and The Street Theatre Present Albert Herring, cystitis a deliciously witty comic opera by Benjamin Britten, 28 – 30 September 2012. “Country virgins, if there be such, think too little and see too much.”
One of Benjamin Britten’s most admired works Albert Herring is a musically inventive coming-of-age story. Unable to find a worthy girl to be crowned May Queen, a small town elects the unquestionably virtuous Albert Herring instead . This lively opera filled with comical characters charts the meek and stumbling Albert’s journey from a fearful and submissive son, to one who steps out into the world, and is transformed.
Melodies abound amidst colourful music of rich imagination, freshness and subtlety with a chamber ensemble of thirteen players led by Melbourne-based conductor Rick Prakhoff joined by The Street Theatre’s artistic director Caroline Stacey. Albert Herring features a mix of professional singers and students from the ANU School of Music and follows the popular and critically acclaimed presentation of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in 2010.Â

Libretto by Eric Crozier based on Le Rosier de Madame Husson by Guy de Maupassant

This year’s seventh annual  Cooma Music Competition is shaping up to be a truly wonderful event for Cooma, the Monaro and the Snowies. The judges for classical this year will include our local musical maestros, Robert Shearer and Rodney Clancy, as well as internationally renowned musical theatre, dance and opera director and librettist, Tessa Bremner. Tessa will also be joined by her husband, Dr Ian Macdonald, who is also an outstanding musical director, composer, theatre set designer and percussionist. The popular music section will be judged by Matt Charlesworth and Alysha Kramer from the wonderful local duo, Black Coffee. http://youtu.be/hAp0GY57LjI
After the success of last year’s Cooma Music Competition it has been decided to book the St Paul’s Parish hall for the extra day, that is, Saturday the 1st September. However, we hope to conduct most of the heats on the Sunday (2nd September) in the afternoon. The evening Finals Concert will still be on the Sunday at 7 pm. We are mindful that many young musicians are involved in Saturday morning sports so we will be trying our best to accommodate all our contestants.
All contestants in this year’s competition will receive a certificate. There will be a medal for first place in each of the solo heats and a trophy for the first place in each of the group and ensemble heats. Â The winners of the heats will be invited back to perform in the Finals Concert on the Sunday evening. These performers will be competing for the following awards and prizes.
