From ANBC Busker to Number One in the Aria Charts! Tones And I, aka Toni Watson, performed at the ANBC Noosa Busking Championships in 2018. There she was noticed by Oz Bayldon, the director of Noosa Come together and the Gympie Music Muster. Oz predicted a huge future for this new talent and he invited her to perform at the Gympie Music Muster. She was then discovered by triple j Unearthed and the rest, as they say, is history.
Fun fact – the last Australian female to do this was Delta Goodrem in 2015.
The Australian National Busking Championships in Cooma this year will now be a two-day Busking Festival.
3rd & 4th November 2018.
Saturday 3rd November will be the ANBC Cooma Regional Busking Championships
Sunday 4th November will be the ANBC National Grand Final
How will this work?
On Saturday…
The ANBC Cooma Regional Busking Championships will basically have the same format as in previous years, with busking performances timetabled during the day on Saturday and then the Finals Concert in the afternoon.
There will be, once again, generous cash prizes awarded, with three age categories (Open Adult, Secondary and Primary School Age), Best Band, Best School Group, Blues Music Award, Special Judges Awards and of course the hugely popular Peoples Choice Awards.
The First Place Getters in each of the age categories in the Cooma Regional Finals on Saturday will be invited back for Sunday to compete in the ANBC National Grand Final.
On Sunday…
The ANBC National Grand Final will now have its own day in Cooma.
First Place Getters from all the seven 2018 ANBC Regional Championships in Stanthorpe, Ballarat, Narooma, Noosa, Peak Hill, Gundagai, and Cooma will be invited to busk on Sunday morning.
Nine competitors, three from each age categories, will then be selected to perform for prizes in the National Grand Final Concert to be held at 1:00 pm.
All the competitors that have qualified to busk on Sunday will receive a cash prize.
Buskers that have qualified for Sunday are welcome to also busk on Saturday. They can receive cash tips, sell CDs and merchandise, however as they will be guaranteed a share of the prizes on Sunday, they will not be able to win extra prizes on Saturday.
We at ANBC are very excited about this year’s expanded program and we hope that the buskers, their supporters and the general public have a fantastic weekend in beautiful Cooma.
More activities, such as Open Mic Sessions and Concerts are also in the planning stage. We’ll keep you posted.

The Alhambra Z natural classical guitar now has a big brother just arrived from Spain!
It’s the Alhambra ZCWE which
Fishman Pickup with Preamp and Chromatic Tuner
is basically, the Z model with an onboard Fishman Pickup & Preamp and a Cut-Away. Big acoustic sound and ready for weddings, parties..anything where more volume is needed.
The luthiers at the premier Spanish guitar making workshop, Alhambra, website have just come out with a new student model classical guitar, the model zero.
Alhambra model zero. Made in Spain for just $499
This is a lovely matte finished full-sized classical guitar with a solid cedar top. It retails for the amazing price of just $499!
The previous entry point guitar in the Alhambra range was its glossy brother, the model 1C which retails for $699. That’s $200 more than the new model zero.
This new model zero is an amazing guitar for the price. It has a beautiful solid cedar top which gives it a full deep rich bass and a warm sustaining treble, plus there’s heaps of volume.
How can they do it for the price? Maybe they saved on the no-frills matte finish. Probably, but what a guitar! Made in Spain for $499. This is really going to upset the Chinese. The Spanish guitar makers are fighting back!
The Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ (ANBC) is now in it’s 6th year. For the first four years the ANBC has been held exclusively in Cooma NSW, the picturesque and historic capital of Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We have thought of these early years as the first stage in the ANBC vision for the future.
The next stage now is to make this event a truly National Championship by holding ANBC Regional Busking Competitions in various regional towns around Australia. The winners from these regional events will be then invited to complete in the National Grand Final back in Cooma in November of each year.
These are our 2017 Regional Busking Competitions so far:
Stanthorpe Qld – 25 February
Ballarat Vic – 18 March
Narooma NSW – 27 May
Noosa Qld – 10 June
Peak Hill NSW – 23 September
In 2018 we could have as many as seven more regional towns on board.
How Does This Work in Cooma?
The buskers are assigned special locations (Busking Hot Spots), at various times, around the CBD Cooma.
A timetable is given to all the registered buskers.
Roaming judges assess these busking performances during the day.
The Judges produce a short list of the best buskers who are then invited to compete in a Grand Final Concert at 4:00 pm at Centennial Park.
First place winners from the Open, Secondary and Primary age categories from the other ANBC Regional Competitions also qualify for a place a the Grand Final. These first place winners are also welcome to busk during the day as they can earn cash tips and Peoples Choice Award votes.
The prizes are then awarded to the buskers with the most outstanding performances at this Grand Finals Concert.
The People’s Choice Award.
All buskers are encouraged to earn cash tips throughout the competition. 100% of this money made in cash tips is theirs to keep. Buskers may also sell their CDs and other merchandise.100% of this money from these sales will also go to these buskers. So besides the extra dollars that enterprising buskers can make in tips and sales there’s over $10,000 in cash to be won. This $10,000 prize pool is made up of over twenty different categories. Among these generous prizes there’s the Peoples Choice Awards where the public gets to vote for their favourite busker. The Peoples Choice Awards are $2,000 in total.
These prizes are awarded to the buskers that get the most Busker Votes.
The public will be able to purchase Busker Votes for $1 each on the day from the Cooma Rotary Club.
There’s a limit of 50 Busker Votes per customer.
The customer must validate their Busker Votes by writing their name and telephone number on the back of their Busker Votes.
Invalid Busker Votes will not be counted.
The public then can vote for their favorite busker by tipping that busker with Busker Votes.
By the way, all of the Busker Votes will be placed into a Lucky Draw for several great prizes.
The Busker Votes Lucky Draw will be conducted during the Finals Concert at the end of the day after all the Busker Votes have been counted.
So the public can share in the fun of the Grand Final Concert by also having a chance at winning prizes.
All The Prizes:
Competitors must be at the Grand Final Concert to win a prize.
In the Age Categories (Open/Secondary/Primary) competitors must be ready to perform on stage.
If deemed necessary the judges may decide to award extra places in the Age Categories. Suitable cash amounts will be allocated to these extra places.

– A Unique Music Festival For Your Town
About:
The Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ (ANBC) is now in it’s 5th year. For the first four years the ANBC has been held exclusively in Cooma NSW, the picturesque and historic capital of Australia’s Snowy Mountains. We have thought of these early years as the first stage in the ANBC vision for the future.
The next stage now is to make this event a truly National Championship by holding Preliminary Championships in various regional towns around Australia. The winners from these regional events will be then invited to complete in the Grand Final back in Cooma on the first weekend in November of each year.
This event has been a great success from day one and as the years have gone by we have developed a template for this festival that we feel, can work in any town with the right kind support and know-how.
We have already had a wonderfully successful ANBC Preliminary Regional Final in Stanthrope, Queensland this year in February.
The Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ is a different sort of music festival for Australia. Music festivals in Australia have typically been based on a particular style of music, e.g. Tamworth Country Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival. The ANBC is a celebration of all styles of music because the buskers that perform in this festival bring a huge variety of music to the event. Whether that be Blues, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Folk, Country, Bluegrass, Indigenous, Multicultural or Classical, the Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ reflects the rich diversity of Australian music culture.
Tickets for most music festivals are expensive; in the ANBC all the street entertainment is provided free of charge. The audience can, of course, tip the busker but that is their choice. All this wonderful music is performed literally feet away from them.
Although there are buskers at many music festivals in Australia, busking is typically relegated to a fringe activity. However, in this festival the buskers take pride of place. This festival brings music back to the people, back to the streets.
How Does This Work?
The buskers are assigned special locations (Busking Hot Spots), at various times, around the central business district of the participating town. A timetable will be emailed to all the registered buskers. Roaming judges assess these performances during the day. The buskers get to choose how many sets they would like to perform and whether they would like to perform for the whole day or just at certain times. However, all buskers must be available to perform in the Preliminary Finals Concert at say, 5pm to be held in an open air venue such as the town park.
The prize-winners for the age categories will be selected by a panel of judges at the Preliminary Finals Concert. The Open Age Winner for each of these regional championships will be invited to go on to compete in the Grand Finals in Cooma.
A Worthwhile Community Event.
In Cooma, we have found that from it’s first year the Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ has helped local not-for-profit groups raise money through fund raising activities on the day. Organisations such as the Cooma District Hospital Auxiliary, Cooma Rotary Club, Cooma Railway, 2MNO Community Radio, Cooma Swimming Club, St Patrick’s Parish School, to name a few, have raised thousands of dollars through this event. In fact, the main reason why the Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ came into existence was through the wonderful work of the “Snowy Ride”. The ANBC was originally conceived to provide entertainment and fun for the 4,000 or so Snowy Riders as they pass through Cooma. Since it’s beginnings in 2001, this annual motorcycle event has raised over $5 million towards childhood cancer research. The Snowy Ride is organised by the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation. So we, at the Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ are pleased to support the Snowy Ride. For more information about the Snowy Ride go to:https://www.snowyride.org.au/
The ANBC has also generated a much needed financial boost to the businesses of our country town. Coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, retail shops and service stations have all benefited over the years. For Cooma, the ANBC comes at a normally “lean time†well after the winter ski season and before the start of Christmas trading. To their credit, local businesses have got behind this event by generously sponsoring prizes for the winners of the Championships.
The Rotary Club Partnership.
In 2014, the Rotary Club of Cooma offered their assistance in running this community based event. Ever since, ANBC has gone from strength to strength. The ANBC committee sees this Rotary connection has vital to the continual growth of this great event.
The Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ has the unique ability to provide significant benefits to the performers, the venue hosts, local businesses, community organisations and the general public. We hope you can join us in providing this wonderful event for your town. Celebrate with us, Australia’s rich and diverse music street culture!
ANBC Cooma 2016 will be a combined event. A Cooma Regional Competition plus National Grand Final on the same day (5th November).
The Grand Final which will contain invited finalists from ANBC Stanthorpe Regional Competition (which was held earlier this year in February) as well as finalists selected during day’s busking in Cooma. This will be the last such combined event.
In 2017 we are on track to have possibly 10 or more Regional Competitions. We will then have two events in Cooma – A Cooma Regional Competition and a National Grand Final also held in Cooma where finalists from all the 10 or so, more about Regional Competitions will compete for the major titles.
The two 2017 Cooma events will be held in Cooma at different times in the year. The Cooma Regional Competition will be held possibly in Autumn 2017 and the Grand Final will be later in the year in November 2017.

They drove down together from Canberra for the day.Third place in the open section went to a fabulous folk group called “The Button Collectiveâ€. They received a cash prize of $200. Originally formed in Lismore, The Button
The Button Collective came all the way from Sydney to compete in the Australian National Busking Championships

The band is lead by guitarist, mandolin player and singer, Brodie Buttons aka Brodie Nossiter who was born and raised in Cooma, with piano accordion player Quinton Trembath and double bassist Jacob Pember.
Olivia Cakarun won the $1000 People’s Choice Award
This year’s People’s Choice Award was Olivia Cakarun a talented 13 year old singer-guitarist from Sydney. She won $1,000. He couldn’t make it to this year’s event but still wanted to be part of the excitement. This year’s third annual Australian National Busking Championshipsâ„¢ was by any measure a huge success, but it could not have happened without the generous support of the Rotary Club of Cooma, the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council, Cooma School of Music and these local businesses and organizations: Alpine Hotel Cooma, Cooma Hotel, Cooma-Monaro Express, Roses Restaurant, Mark Kenmir & Co, Eucumbene Trout Farm, Cooma Little Theatre, Cooma Lions Club, Cooma Family Dental, Snowy Monaro Arts Council, P D Murphy’s Cafe, Moontree Health Foods, The Monaro Post, ABC Local Radio, Radio 2XL, Snow FM Radio, 2MNO Community Radio, Cooma Cafe, 40 Cafe, Never Ending Memories, Mainstreet, Snowy Camping World, Cooma Trophy & Gift Centre, Pizza House Food Factory, Bush Basics, Kettle and Seed, The Two Vaults Restaurant and The Lott Foodstore.  ABC Radio National – Bush Telegraph – Podcast:

Stars Will Come Out This Saturday
In the first item on the Arts Council’s concert programme this Saturday evening, musician Chris Wall will be playing trumpet and piano at the same time. To find out how he achieves this and to appreciate the results, you will need to come along to St Paul’s Anglican Parish Hall for the 7:30pm recital.
This concert, the final Snowy Monaro Arts Council presentation for 2014, is named “Stars†in deference to the rich programme. It includes the title song, “Stars†from ‘Les Miserables’ as well as Albert Arlen’s arrangement of “Clancy of the Overflow†(featuring the lines, “And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended, and at the night the wond’rous glory of the everlasting starsâ€).
These two pieces are not the only stars to be enjoyed on the night. The three performers Glenyss Allen, Thomas Keenan and Chris Wall are each very accomplished in their instruments – piano, voice and brass respectively.
The programme also showcases well-loved composers and well-loved tunes such as Henry Mancini and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Tickets for “Stars†are available at The Fabric Salon in Cooma. Admission is $25 for an Adult, $20 for Concession and $15 for Snowy Monaro Arts Council members. Admission is free for children and school students. Of course supper is included in the ticket price.

How to play thousands of songs without even trying…
Most songs can be played with 3 or 4 chords. Musicians called this the “Three Chord Trick”.
These chords are based on triads built on the first, search fourth & fifth notes of the scale you are working in.
Ok before your eyes start to glaze over I’ve added a one page chart that you can use as a quick reference. ( print it  & keep it in your guitar case) Pdf > Chords for Guitar – Working in Chord Progressions
I’ve just stayed with the most common keys for guitar and added in some of the extra chords (vi & ii -occasionally iii in the Major keys and III & VII in the Minor keys). If you become familiar with these typical chord progressions you’ll be able to accompany thousands songs as well as get a deeper understanding about how harmony works in any style of diatonic music generally.
(This works with Ukulele too!)

The luthiers at the premier Spanish guitar making workshop, decease Alhambra, hospital have just came out with a new student model classical guitar, gynecologist the model zero.
Alhambra model zero. Made in Spain for just $399
This is a lovely matte finished full-sized classical guitar with a solid cedar top. It retails for the amazing price of just $399!
The previous entry point guitar in the Alhambra range was it’s glossy brother, the model 1C which retails for $599. That’s $200 more than the new model zero.
This new model zero is an amazing guitar for the price. It has a beautiful solid cedar top which give it a full deep rich bass and a warm sustaining treble, plus there’s heaps of volume.
How can they do it for the price? Maybe they saved on the no-frills matte finish. Probably, but what a guitar! Made in Spain for $399. This is really going to upset the Chinese. The Spanish guitar makers are fighting back!
There are only 12 of these model zero guitars imported into Australia and the next shipment could be dearer if the Aussi dollar keeps going down.
